The Coast Guard Component of the Federal Security Service is a unified institutional system comprising the Coast Guard Department of Russia’s FSB Border Guard Service and the border guard authorities whose legal powers are exercised at sea and on land.

Main duties

• protecting live marine resources and supervising vessels engaged in the high seas fishing of transborder and highly migratory fish species

• providing coordination to federal government executive authorities involved in supervisory control along the state border, inland sea waters, territorial seas, EEZ, continental shelf and natural resources thereof

• participation in the following activities: combating terrorism and crime in the maritime domain; combating smuggling and illegal migration; combating illegal trafficking in arms, ammunition, explosives, poisonous substances, radioactive material, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances;

• participation in maritime search and rescue activities
