The Finnish Border Guard operates on land, at sea and in the air, with the aim of ensuring Finland’s territorial integrity and the safety of people. The Finnish Border Guard consists of four Border Guard Districts and two Coast Guard Districts, an Air Patrol Squadron and a Border and Coast Guard Academy.
The Finnish Border and Coast Guard Districts are responsible for border security and maritime search and rescue duties on their respective areas of responsibility. The Headquarters of the Finnish Border Guard is located in Helsinki and it serves as the Border Guard Department of the Ministry of the Interior.
The Finnish Border Guard's duties concerning maritime safety and security include but are not limited to: maritime search and rescue, environmental surveillance, maritime pollution prevention and recovery, monitoring of waterborne traffic, crime prevention and maritime law enforcement, and tasks related to maritime customs. The Finnish Border Guard is actively promoting international collaboration in its activities.
